Range Hood exhaust fan noise !!!

Hi,
have got flash 'top of the range' Kleenmaid Range hood. Looks beaut but is in open plan kitchen/living/dining room. While watching TV it is like having an aircraft taking off next to you. Is it possible to get the exhaust fan replaced/moved to on the roof or externally? I know Prestige Appliances do a range hood which has the fan outside but I do not want to buy another $3000 range hood. I like the look of the one I have.

Check for bits of it vibrating Tony. Years ago, I fitted a Mistral that roared so much it was painful to listen to. The Mistral tech explained that there was a problem with that model - plastic bits vibrating. He siliconed one bit to another and it reduced the noise considerably. Unfortunately, we couldn't get it less than that and suspected there was vibration in the wall as well. The thing is, it didn't sound like vibration, it sounded just like normal fan roar.

So I'd be taking bits out (covers and the like) to see if you can reduce the noise. Hopefully you'll find something you can fix in place to stop it vibrating.

A lot of rangehoods have the motor inbuilt and it cannot be moved but you may be able to have it relocated to the top of the flue, if it is strong enough of course.

You will prolly need to talk to the manufacturers to find out if it is possible.

I've never heard or seen a quiet exhaust fan yet doesn't matter what brand they all sound like a jet warming up.

THanks for the replies, I guess I should have just bought one with an external fan from Prestige in the first place. I would have a tinker with it but its 100cm wide and weighs a ton (is a 'semi commercial' one).......

is the rangehood ducted? If so, with corrugated flex duct? I"ve fitted ducts to previously unducted rangehoods and the better airflow quietened them down. Also having the air discharge into the duct rather than back into the room probably made a diiference too. Apparently the corrugated flexi duct induces more noise than a smooth wall duct does.

Your quandary is exactly why I posted my query on this forum. Checkout the replies I received to my post at RANGE HOOD EXHAUST (2) - external fan/motor units.

In my experience if you get a quiet rangehood it does'nt work very well. The more noise the more suck.

If only that applied to the missus !!!!!!

Use a smooth bore duct (straight up and out through the roof) without reducing the diameter or introducing any bends. This will help keep down the noise.
