Just wondering how hard it would be to change a standard carport into an outdoor area. Specifically I was wondering if it was possible to recess the ceiling, then line it with wood panelling?
The carport is part of a relatively new house, off the plan from a project home builder, very similar to the one attached.
I have a bit of experience in DIY, and a fair bit of equipment to work with, any advice if it is easy or even possible?

Lining the ceiling should be no problem.
The walls may cause a bit of a problem. When it rains where does the water run.
If through the carport then you will have to worry about how you stop this if the walls are going to go down to ground level.
As Jim mentioned, not too hard as far as some projects go.
Things to watch for is adequate drainage away from the to be constructed walls,
termite protection for the new walls (I presume the carport has timber posts in stirrups or Gal posts in ground)
The floor should be fairly level,
if cladding in timber build your new Walls to full height, if building walls in brick - stop them about 10-15mm short of full height,
If you can make a wall frame it'll be easy

I thought it would look more like an alfresco area and less like a carport if I got rid of the white fibro ceiling, and lined it with timber panelling. That led onto the idea of recessing the ceiling, either in a box fashion, or something else. I have attached a couple of pictures of roughly what I want to do, but it is very much depended on what is under the ceiling.<O:p</O:p

Spelunx, if it's a truss roof over then timber lining up to 19mm should be ok. If it is a 'stick' construction you will need to determine if the extra load is ok for the timber spans.
I'd be careful & investigate it thoroughly if you are looking at hanging a large amount of timber off the existing structure to form a stepped up ceiling effect.
Other than that I can't see any obvious problems [unless you are thinking of enclosing the area at all]

As to enclosing it, we had thought of putting some clear blinds all around to protect it from the weather, but we have no intentions of enclosing it in the sense of making it an indoor area.
