I have exhausted the microsoft help site re my System Restore problem.(wont restore to any date)
I am posting a picture of my sytem restore properties page and ask can any member tell me how I can ascertain if I have used up all the 12% space to be made available for the system restore to work.
I have a 160gb harddrive of which 100gb is in use. Could it be that I have used all of that 12% space that has been alloted for system restore?

Once sysem restore is turned off it flushes all restore points. Perhaps you turned it off today and no restore points exist.
1. Create a restore point
2. Reboot and see if it is available.
3. If it is restore has been flushed it is now working.
4. If it aint turn it off reboot turn it on create a restore point and repeat 1 & 2
It it still not then windows is screwed by either virus, file corruption or a bad sector on the hard disk. Most likely #1. - back up format and reload windows
You could prolly have done that 3 times over by now.
The 12% is a furphy, windows will keep restore points up to 12% and if it cant keep at least one, will warn you. The more free space on the boot partiotion the more points will be restored. By the sound of your drive you need to archive stuff off to dvd, dump what you dont need. You shouldnt really run a boot partition at more than about 40-50% else windows spends most of the processor time wading through that mountain of files.
Easiest solution would be install a new hard disk, partition it like 25% boot partion plus one or more other partitions for data storage. Load windows on the new boot partition. I bought a 200 gig ide drive this week $130.00 You will end up wiith a dual boot windows asnd you will have fun getting it to load the right partition without waiting the regular 30 seconds before it boots ionto the new windows.
It should take about an hour to install the new drive and load windows
the rest of the afternoon will be spent getting the internet going and loading your software.

I decided I could follow your advice and give it a run before leaving for an appointment so reporting the following.
Partly Yay:D :D :D
I set a restore point for today and then rebooted, the restore point for today was listed and requested it restore to todays entry.
That logged out and rebooted with the confirmation that it had restored to todays restore point.......................Good:D
Dare I ask it to restore to an earlier point to see if they are working or should I let sleeping dogs lie?;)

Hi. Sprogg, There is plenty of space left on the hard drive 60gb.
I did get the system restore working again a cou-le of days ago, did a restore point>shut down>rebooted>and asked sytem restore to restore to that last point and it worked.
BUT,
It won't restore to that point agin today, says unable to restore on message, so it look like I am back in trouble again.

Personally I turn off system restore on all my PCs
I can see the point in turning it on before a major update, but I usually just back up my data and if the machine crashes beyond my ability to fix, I will just Nuke From Orbit and restore my data files.
The PC just seems to run better without system restore switched on :rolleyes:

The only reason I want system restore working is because I have in the past used Microsoft Train Simulator software.
When making scratch built models to run on this simulator it means modifying existing folders in the simulator using (notepad) and system restore meant I could return to normal program if I had made some b~l#s up in the coding.
So on my return from Oz next year I shall most probably purchase a new hard drive and obtain my own Winows XP so I can format and reinstall if things go haywire.
My present system relies on a reload disk so I cannot partition or get inside to Windows because it is secured with a password in a partition and the reload disk.
