Help! Timber floorboards

We are renovating our house and would like timber floorboards in our living area, problem is we want to do this as cheaply as possible, wondering if anyone knows if we can buy cheap timber and stain it ourselves and if so what type of timber??!! Basically any ideas on how we can do this as cheaply as possible would be appreciated. We plan to lay it ourselves .. . thanks
