Some pics of a Baltic pine floor I just completed in Melbourne. Lots of nasty Black Japan and some hideous stains.
These were taken after the second coat. A final coat was still to be applied.

That looks like my floor I just took the lino away from. Whats Black Japan? Also can I ask why there is a dark square around the edge...I have the same on mine?

Black Japan is the black square around the edge as Rowie says.
It melts onto your sanding discs after about 20 cms of sanding and drives you crazy.
On this room I hand scraped the Japan as it comes off fairly easily, then sanding is no real problem. On other jobs I have found 16 grit paper gets it off, just about.
I have also read that wetting it with Kero stops it from clogging your paper, but I didn't have a fire extinguisher handy, so I stuck to hand scraping it.
I took some pics today with the final coat of semi-gloss in place, will post one later.
Extracare, great result with the floorboards. About to polish my pine boards soon and was wondering what sort of putty you used to fill the nail holes. I've seen timbermate pine filler l think it's called. Is this what you used and does anyone have any recommendations.
Also i've heard differing views on when to fill the holes. I was going to do it before l started sanding but other have said to do it after sanding and others have said after the first coat of polish. What do people recommend.

On this job I used Timbermate Pine, you can see that it's pretty good on nail holes, but the large repair shows up a bit too much.
I always fill twice. Once before I do my last sand with the big sander and a touch-up after the first coat where needed.
You'll want to add a splash of water to the Timbermate to make it easier to work in, but don't make it sloppy or it'll shrink too much when it dries.

Here's a Gloss v Satin comparison shot. Both look good. The householder wanted satin so that scuffs, marks and dust showed up less.
