Pine Panelling -Help what is it.

I have a house thats been lifted and Im trying to work out what to line the interior of the house with downstairs. I was looking into vj sheeting but its quite expensive and we have a large area to do. A friend said she had heard that t&g pine panelling was a cheaper way to go. I have no idea what it is Ive tried to search the net but not alot is comming up. Has anybody used or seen it and any ideas on what it looks like. Can it be painted to look like T&G that you see in Queenslanders or do the knots etc show through. :o

pants, pine panelling/pine lining is (here anyway - where the BH is Sandgat4e?) 140x12 t&g run of mill pine, often has VJ pattern on one side & regency on other. Knotty & cheap & cheerful.

I'd reckon the knots would show through paint.

I'll assume you're in Sandgate near Newcastle. Is that correct?

Pine tongue & groove panelling is fairly common. Most timber places would have it I reckon. In fact, I'd be surprised if Bunnings didn't have it.

have used t&g pine a lot large bedroom and some other rms as well the bedroom was all second hand wood needed all the old nail holes filled etc but as it was painted came up fine and the knot holes didnt show up much at all still looking ok 2 yrs down the track

also found it was pretty cheap as was very little wastage as was able to join short pieces together as long as i remenbered which angle i had cut the boards at

what about doing a 1/2 wall with the wood and then daddo line about room and rest with plaster board above ? might work out cheaper and still have that old world look

when i re do rest off hse here will look at doing all the rms out with the boards thats when i can afford to get rid of the fibro thats on the walls inside and out at the monent

where I get my supplies from pine panelling is about $1.75 per lineal metre for 133mm cover which means it will cost you about $13.15 per square metre.
mdf vj sheeting will cost about $45 for a 1200 x 2400 sheet, about $15.60 per square metre.
IMHO I don't think the panelling looks the part as it has a V joint down the centre of it making it look like 66 mm VJ's (too narrow) the VJ sheeting has 101mm V joints, goes up much quicker and takes paint better.
You should get a better price than above if you are buying a large quantity.
You could go with proper VJ's but that will cost you about $60 a square metre:D .

Hi - if you are in a queenslander I recommend you consider Regency style lining boards instead of VJ. I think they are more attractive than VJ and are the same price - BTW if you are going to paint them, R.O.M. is an excellent choice, as the imperfections can be filled - if you intend clear-lacquering or staining them, think carefully as the look dates very quickly and the finish can yellow significantly (at least it did back in the 80's :D when all and sundry were pine lining their homes - me too......what was I thinking!!!???)

it is unfortunate that this country doesn't offer many other alternative profiles for lining boards. When we extend (okay, 'if') I will be running my own profile, a 60mm small regency bead lining board, as seen in just about every period home renovation in the USA. It is great as panel infills on cabinet doors too as well as splashbacks, when correctly sealed. I will hunt down a pic and Post it in a minute in case anyone is interested to see it

This is a piccie of the pine panelling with the Regency bead done part way up the wall with gyprock the rest of the way up.
