Technical questions about voip and 2 way satellite

I live in a messmate\blackwood\ash forest.
Does 2 way satellite need a fully clear line of site?

If so, can I mount the satellite dish on an 80 metre tall tower to get above the tree tops? Any idea of costs of a tower? Supplied and installed.

How precisely does a satellite dish need to be aimed, can I just do it with a good compass?

Assuming voip will work on the 2 way satellite internet, are there any payphones that can work voip?

Is 2 way satellite adequate for video conferencing for training purposes?

Can I set up a local network with the satellite internet, where there is about 120 metres between buildings without a having very clear line of sight. (theres a bit of firewood with leaves in the way)

I'm not concerned about the costs of doing all this as I will be looking for grants to cover the costs. What I do need is a reliable service.

My isdn is downloading at about 3kbs at the moment, a few days ago it dropped down to 215 bs (not kbs - bs) so the sooner I can give the big puddle the flick the better.

for information on satelitte info in general, do you have any specs on what you need to get reception? dish size where you are etc.

Sat signals prefer shorter runs of cable as they are very high frequency,

if you only want this for internet you may be able to stretch the signal run by doing it in Cat5 rather than coax from the dish electronics but would need power for the electronics

If this is your first dish it will be interesting as you need to point it in 3 dimensions, even more interesting with an offset dish, but helper electronics is available avcomm and others PM me if you want more

Satellite reception can be attenuated by trees and buildings but metal objects are worst. Clear line of sight towrads satellite is prefereable. During wet weather youll notice a deterioration in reception as well.....youll be able to tell when its raining without looking out the window.

Supplied and installed. yes, I used to install a 30m triangle shaped southern cross tower 15 yrs ago that cost approx 25k. it would be more now - an 80 m tower would be heaps more,

yes its all about bandwidth

youll have probelms

echinda, a 80 m tower will be very prohibitive in cost, admin, approvals etc - ie councils etc. lets not even mention hostile neighbours or environmental laws....

you'll be better off cutting the trees down and planting shrubs. you only need a clear line of site UP to the geosatationary sattelite that your dish points at - it wont cost a lot in trees...

if you have issues with terrestrial line of sight for your different buildings you could set up a direct point to point radio although for 120m it would be better served by a cable connection.

you will ALWAYS have rain fade, sunspot fade etc in inclement adverse weather with a sattelite.

where you getting the money from ? a money tree ? this will cost a packet.

sattellite up link down link delay is about 3 to 4 seconds each way. you dont want an intranet with those delays- use cable.

ALso - pay a consultant to advise you on the best solution, what you are suggesting is not feasible / finacially viable, especially if you're using someone elses money.

you'd be better served paying one of the carriers for a 2meg lease (either ATM, or SDH).

Just one thing Bob you cannot self install 2 way satellite. It must be done by a licenced qualified contractor as there are inplications in that if you get the upload and download connection wrong as the guy that put mine on said as one person tried and put France off the air and caused all sorts of legal issues.

Trying to set it up with a compass and not a meter anyway is a bit hairy because if you are 1mm out at the dish by the time it gets to the satellite you could be a 1000 kls out.
