Bituminous paint on zinc gutters?

Our gutters are starting to show signs of age with the occasional drip here and there. We have just had a 6m length replaced as it was badly rusted and ruining the paving.

Would it be beneficial to apply a bituminous paint to the existing gutters (on the inside) to help seal them a little and hopefully delay the inevitable replacement for a little while.

You might find that when you start to clean them out with a wire brush ready for painting that they're a bit sad.

But you can use bitumen paint to repair water tanks so why not gutters.

If the holes are a bit big drop a bit of fibreglass flyscreen on the wet paint and recoat.

Hi Stinky, honestly mate, the amount of time it would take to clean out & dry the oldies, just bit the bullet mate & them off. Go get some new zincalume & brackets & the job will be over for the next 20yrs.

Whilst replacement is probably better painting them with bituminous paints will work very well and should extend the life of your gutters for at least 5 years. I have done this as I wanted to extend the life of the gutters untill I could get my roof fixed and that is how long they lasted. The reason was that the chemicals used in getting your roof done may well affect the gutters. Once the roof was done I replaced them.

Thanks guys ....... it sound like it will not do any harm.

I might have to wait until the warmer weather to get up and have a good look. From what I have seen from the ground they shouldn't fall apart if I give them a little clean up.

The problem with the section that I had replaced is that the previous owner (handyman) had removed the down pipe in the corner when he extended the garage out to meet the house. For some reason he didn't put a replacement dropper onto the garage roof to get rid of the water in the corner so it rusted out fairly quickly. The new gutter now has a dropper onto the garage roof which has a down pipe right where the dropper comes out.

I patch gutters with bitumin paint all the time with no complaints yet
