How to check an oven

Dear all,

I need to get my mother another oven. She has mentioned that she would like the Chef brand. She has up to about $350 to spend. I have seen a few in the Trading Post, but they are all disconnected so you can't test them:( . It will cost about $150 for a gasfitter to attach one to the gas line. I don't want to buy an oven, have it fitted and then find out that it's no good. Does anyone know of any way you can check the state of an oven before purchase? What should I look for? Any advice is welcome

I'd add a few dollars and help her get a new one, secondhand white goods are usually pulled out for a good reason. Surely a family wip round would cover the few hundred needed.

I'm assuming you are in Blackburn, Melbourne. If so, there is a shop round the corner from my house, in Elsternwick that has nothing but 2nd hand cookers. They are probably cheap, may be supplied with some sort of "warrant of fitness" and could be worth a look. The shop is in Glenhuntly Road, on the north side, just east of Kooyong Road.
