Covering big joins/internal corners

Dear all,

I will be doing some plastering this weekend. The 2 jobs that I have to do are covering some big joins about 1 cm wide :eek: and redoing internal corners:o .

The first job is to cover where the old picture rail used to be, there's a wide gap between the sheets. I assume cornice cement would be the best thing to fill the gap with?

Second job is to redo some of the internal corners where I used paper tape. The tape has come away from the wall and in some cases buckled. Could anyone give me any tips/help on why this may have happened and what to do so that it doesn't happen again. It has only happened in some places.

Cornice cement would be the best thing for the gaps. The paper may have come away due to movement in the wall or because it was not bedded into the basecoat enough. Either not enough basecoat or you pressed too hard and squeezed it out. I would use the fibreglass mesh tape instead, its easier to use and quite acceptable despite what people will try and tell you.

Thanks, Michael for your input. I suspected that cornice cement was really the only thing I could have used in these circumstances.

I'm intrigued by the fibreglass mesh, have you used it successfully for internal corners, would have thought that it was too thick to cover up.

No, I just mean the plastering tape that is a self adhesive mesh, not fibreglass matting. Sorry for the confusion.

thanks, Michael. Is this tape available at specialist plaster stores only or do Bunnies carry it?

I wouldn't use the fibreglass for your internals.You will have trouble covering it.Stick with paper tape.
