Removing old stain?

Hello,
After glueing a cracked tote from a Stanley 10 I thought a light sanding and oiling would be worth while. When sanding bright pink saw dust was evident, I assume this is the remaining cherry stain applied to the beech tote.
No amount of sanding will remove this deep stain or a couple of black spots also on the tote. Steel wool & turps dont work either.
Any suggestions on how to remove it? Or do I simply stain with a darker colour & finish by rubbing oil or wax into it?

Hi Bill,

I think (emphasis on the Think, not Know) that oxalic acid may help here. Do a Google on Oxalic acid - you can get it at most h/ware stores.

I will head to the hardware & get some.
I dont suppose it will react with the glue ( foaming aquadhere)? BTW I use this stuff a lot as a general purpose adhesive & find it good. Have you any experience with it?
