Possum deterrent

G'day :)

Working outside on Saturday morning I happened to look up and noticed a grey tail hanging over the gutter under the pergola. On closer inspection (ie a prod at the gutter with a length of timber), a pair of amber eyes peeped over the top as if to say "yes? what's your issue?"

A blasted Possum. Blasted with a good spray from the hose :eek: :D

Sunday morning. Quick check - and there's two of the blighters!

More hose treatment.

This morning: they're both back, and have filled the gutter in one corner with their lunch :mad:

Any ideas on the permanent ejection of these budding footie players (they like to have a game or two during the night on the roof - and sound as if they're wearing boots as well....)

I'm thinking of installing razor wire in the gutters :eek: I really don't want to hurt the critters, but I do want them elsewhere:rolleyes:

I feel your pain. We're currentky sufering with possums eating our camelias :(

Quasia chips are supposed to be good if you can find them, we didn't have much luck.

There is a product out called "Poss Off" which contains Quasia and which we are trying at the moment.

I've also put up a 150w sensor activated outside light focused on the tree but I have to say that it's not that successful. :(

Keep in mind that possums are a protected species in Australia (well they are in NSW anyway).

Lemme see, electrolysis instructions here somewhere, attach positive lead to... :D

We have a couple of these bastxxx living inside the roof.:mad: They come out at night and party, they jump onto the balcony and damage the deck.

I don’t want them to stay there but there is not way to get them out. It bothers me the fact that they might make a big mess in there and worse one day they might die in there. Apparently it is illegal to catch them and dump them somewhere far away.

What can I do? Anyone?:( :( :( :( :(

There's an albino possum living around my mum and dad's house, interesting that it's been around for years since most albino wild animals die pretty early on in life.

Mum and dad wish that were a universal law I am sure. ;)

they don't like napthalene flakes (mothballs).

You can get a licensed wildlife guy to come and trap them. We had the same problem a couple of years ago. He also found the spot in the roof where it were getting in and blocked it up.

PM me if you are interested and I'll try and dig out his details.

Believe it or not some local councils will hire you a possum trap (Manly Council in Sydney is one that does) and they even send out a wildlife guy to advise on where to put it and where you can let the critter go when you catch him/her/them.
When we moved to Sydney from Adelaide in the 60's, my father used the "lead poisoning" (.22 version) system, not knowing that they were protected in NSW. I still don't know whether they were protected in SA at the time, but Dad relied on the ignorance of everything outside NSW of the average person in Sydney in those days and he got off with a slap on the wrist. The possums still don't come near the old family house.....

Put a bright light up in the roof at night. When they've gone, try to block their entrances.

Learn to live with them, they don't really do much harm, just a bit noisy.

They have little respect for their hosts tho. I had one crap on my head whilst at the BBQ. Little bastard was sitting immediately above on a tree branch and let go. Fortunately no curries lately, but he still went off like a machine gun, droppings similar to a goat. Managed to get about a 80% hit rate from his salvo, much to the amusement of the guests.

Well, I have a Karcher high pressure cleaner. I have found that a needle jet of high pressure water (yes, I know! :) ) just about 10cm from their furry little rumbs does wonders :eek: ;) :D

Still wouldn't want to be machine pooped from above though :eek:
