Nigth time Overlander scrapped

:( Sad news that the night time Overlander is to be scrapped. having married a mexican and in the early years getting the train over heaps and heaps, the highlight was the sensational night trip back :cool: many a night in drunken stupors was spent partying in the old dog boxes:D :D :D :D :D

tis a sad day. I have been on that train many a times. A great trip and the seating cabins had some of the most comfortable seats on any form of transport!

I'm surprised you still have it to be honest.

In NSW the dog boxes dissapeared about 20 years ago. As did the Southern Auroraur (sp) sadly.

I agree though that the old dog boxes were great. :)

The old wooden sleeping cars were even better.

craig the dog boxes went about 20 years ago aswell. the sad part is the overlander from melb to adel was a over night trip and always ended up party time big time. now its been changed to day time boring time:( best part of the dog boxes was the luggage rack above where youd climb into for a sleep:D

Anybody else here been on "The Blue Train" - it runs from Pretoria to Cape Town, with just one stop, at Johannesburg (apart from a brief stop to pick up newspapers in some back-of-beyond dorp (Africaans for a small town or village) in the middle of the Great Karoo).

I went on it once with the gf of the day; took the car along as well.

The most amazingingly smooth, quiet and comfortable train ride I've ever had. Absolutely fantastic service, and a great restaurant car. Formal dress for dinner is (well, was!) de rigueur - except for a couple of obnoxious yanks in jeans & T-shirts :eek:

Only two compartments per carriage, so not too many people, but that also means it's hard to get tickets. Worth it though. Even at around 2 1/2 time the price of an air ticket.

I've heard that that is one of the world's luxury tran rides. Like the Venice-Simplon Orient Express.

I don't think I coud afford it unfortunately. :(

Hi Craig,

That it is. Pure, unadulterated luxury. :D

Press the button in the compartment, and the steward is there just about before one's finger is off the button.

We had a bath in our compartment, and there was berely a ripple on the water, even though the train was running at normal service speed: about 85Km/H.

Takes about 24hrs from Johannesburg to Capte Town (actually that's quite slow, as I used to cover a slightly longer distance by car in just over 12Hrs - mind you that did include a bit of, ahem, "right pedal" :D (e.g. set the cruise control at 240Km/H through the Karoo....)
