Anyone familiar with or use Lanotec?

Hi All,

I'm a newbie here so forgive my ignorance. We are building a house in southern Victoria(on the beach) and have installed a new set of Meranti Bi-fold doors. I need to seal these doors before they become too weathered and was trying to determine the best finish to use. I was going to use Sikkens but the chap at the hardware store swears by this Lanotec product so before I rush to buy it I was wondering whether anyone has had any experiences with it (good or bad)? I want to go for a semi-gloss finish and the door faces east so it gets full sun until say 12ish (well duh:rolleyes: ) so maybe someone can recommend something that might suit my purpose? I just want something that will retain the look of the grain - I don't mind if it darkens it slightly (they all do) but would prefer not to stain it to any degree. Any and all help is much appreciated.

Try a search on Google's .AU site for Lanotec, I would think they have a web site by now.

IIRC all 'Lanotec' products are lanolin (sheep wool grease) based lubricants & anti-rust compounds, not wood finishes - BUT you never know what the R&D department will come up with. Heck, when I was a kid 'Penetrol' was a thin oil my grandfather put on his tools to stop rust - now its a paint primer & paint additive.

On the anti-rust & lube feilds Lanotec are apparently excellent.

Been a couple of posts recently and vote as I remember goes to sickens or wattyl but maby this stuff is new

Thanks guys. I have been to the Lanotec website but lets face it - it's not a consumer website, it's a product website so of course they'll tell you how good it is. Nonetheless, they do have a wood sealant product called (funnily enough) Wood Seal which seems (according to the site) to be what I'm after but I'd still prefer to get some unbiased user information. I've tried Danish oil and water-based finishes, plain stain and oil, and varnish. All fail in time without lots of maintenance. Can your design handle natural fading? If the wiid is stable (like cedar) I'd do this, or go the full monty and use a marine varnish system like Epiglass, and re-do it every 12 months. Like on boats.

Firstly, I'm not an expert. However, I'm a fan of Lanotec and have used it on a couple of items. However, I'm not sure whether it will be the most suitable finish for the exterior door. A semi-gloss finish - I've only ever achieved a matt finish, not even satin - maybe I should have waxed it after applying the lanotec or even simply polished the lanotec more maybe???

With the door facing due east and exposed to the weather, I reckon you'd have to lightly sand and recoat the doors regularly - at least once a year?? to keep the protection up to the doors so they don't lose their colour.

Don't get me wrong, the Lanotec is a great product, but I've never used it for exterior surfaces and can't really say 100% that it will be great.

I've used it on WRed Cedar, silky oak and some sort of pine. The cedar soaked it up and asked for more. The silky oak didn't need a huge amount and the finish was only average in my opinion. The pine? went a beautiful dark red, soaked it up and would polish up really well I think.

Havn't used it but would imagine any Kiwi visitors would love the ambiance of the finished product. Make sure your chilly bin is full when they come down from Bondi to visit.:D :D :D

Ring the customner service people at Laontec -- they have been very helpful to me in the past.

Have not used their Timber Seal product in your situation so cannot comment on its suitability. It does buff to a dull shine however.

As I think I mentioned, the chap in hardware section was really ramping this product up but based on the replies here I may go with my gut here and just opt for something a little more tried and true. Ok so what d'y'all recommend? Semi-gloss with zero upkeep please:D
