Tins of [insert type] Finish
The first thing I do when I get a new tin of oil, varnish, paint, etc. is to knock about half a dozen holes in the recess of the rim with a nail.
Nail size is determined using a very complicated mathematical process. If it's a big tin with gluggy stuff, use a biggish nail. A small tin with runny stuff uses a smaller nail.
This way the excess from wiping your brush is drained back into the tin (saving money):) and the rim doesn't get full of stuff which splatters ever you when you bang the lid on (saving a bashing from SWMBO) .
