Addition of eave overhang to skillion roof

Hello to all.

I have an old house with an extension that has a skillion roof. The side of the roof has no overhang and finished flush with the wall. I would like to add an overhang for eaves.

A couple of options I have come up with a couple of ideas that include:
i. Extending the battens within the standard limits (clause 7.3.15 Roof battens) to create the overhang for sheeting, potentially add frame support to the wall and add a fascia to them.
ii. Have lookouts as per image below and attach fascia to this.

The fascia will be colourbond style so not very heavy.

First of all, is the picture attached your structure or just grabbed from the internet?
What size are the battens in your construction and the orientation of their installation.

While the fascia may not be very heavy you do need to account for anyone that may be on the roof doing work and not aware there is an overhang, if they step on a lightweight construction will it support their weight ?

The picture is just a grab to show what I meant with option 2.

The battens currently installed are 90 x 35mm and I will use the same.

The eave extension is about 315mm and the battens have been installed at about 500 mm (its an old building).

In what orientation ? Horizontal or vertical ?


In vertical orientation the 90mm will flex less with the same weight than the horizontal 35mm and would probably not need additional bracing. It would also worth considering installing as a continuous member over a number of rafters rather than extension sections only fixed to the last rafter, if you dont have the option then diagonal bracing underneath back the the wall would be wise.

The battens are 90mm horizontal. I could go back to the second rafter as I am also repairing the batten ends due to water damage, meaning I have to go back to a rafter anyway. An additional 450mm is not a big deal.

Just thinking about, I could even cut the existing rafter much further in, pushing it to the edge and extend for the overhang, then add a repair piece in the middle somewhere. Its a little more work, but not to big a deal.

Diagonal trimmers to a ledger is also possible.
