Help with ID'ing this timber & stain from a ~ 1960's Melbourne home

Hi everyone,

I'm need to match this existing timberwork in a home here in Melbourne.

I believe this is tas oak, and has been stained with a red/brown varnish. I originally thought it might be red iron bark, but it's not dark enough for that - and also not commonly used in this sort of application.

Does anyone have any idea what type of more modern varnish or stain would be suitable here? to get the best match?

Also if you have any different opinions on the timber, would love to hear it :)

It does look like tas oak. Cant really say what varnish it is however. It still looks to be in reasonable condition. A wipe over with sugar soap then a bit of wax polish looks like all it needs. If you have other wood you want to match that then you will have to experiment to get a match.

Based on the age I would expect that it would have been a spirit based stain then clear over the top.

A number of manufacturers still do spirit based stains, any good outlet should have a display board with examples on a selection of timber varieties to compare in person.

Maple was a pretty common colour choice back in the day.

Ahh interesting. I do use spirit stains a lot but I never expected they were used back then. So that's a good thing to point out - thanks.
