G'day mate, or as I was born in the Bronx, How youse guys doing?
My name is Gerry.
I am downstate NY now (about 20 minutes north of NYC).
I started woodturning about 5 years ago because I had to do a project and got hooked.
I haven't turned much, a lot of pens, Indian clubs, nostepinnes.
Now I have too many machines and not enough knowledge.
I will look through and probably ask questions about things such as sand lines etc.

Ha..... nostepinnes basically a dibble stick (sort of) used for winding yarn on to make a usable ball with the end of the yarn coming out of the centre of the ball, making for easy untangled use.
Used to make a few for the spinners in and around Newstead and Maldon some 30 odd years ago.

Neil brought me into the group after I harassed him with many questions after buying these antique and distressed bocce balls. It was on my to do list as a teacher I make a long list of things not to forget to do over the summer.

I am currently abusing it with oversized things. I am making an Indian club in prosopis juliflora, but I am using chuck and steady from big lathe. It just fits on there.
You can see me laying it out and then the state it is in right now.

2) state of Indian Club on lathe until I finish coffee--I am taking my time and adjusting my design by fractions of an inch as I go on this. I went through about 5 prototypes and then finally got to 3 below. Now I am slightly adjusting. I am also going to finish these all Ubeaut stuff and see how it holds up after it is cured. Most guys do like a poly or something nowadays, but I don't like the feel. I am going to see handling over time vs. Tru Oil. I know the Ubeaut will be much nicer for looks--and I learned the word chatoyance from it!

3) What it will look like-my personal set in teak. I have many antique ones, and many people try to recreate the antique ones, but this is my own design to compliment my training. Many traditional guys would not like. I don't care. Although it was an Australian maker who turned me onto how to make my own.

4) An example of weird things I do--this is a an exercise club in Lignum Vitae for my friend Randal, specifically tailored to what he does. He likes to do longsword stuff, bataireacht, and gets in trouble with his wife when he does it inside (occasionally scuffs the ceiling) so i made this for him to train with if you put the baseball weight (I had to explain this to British friends--it goes on a baseball bat to "strengthen" your swings, but they come in different weights--this way he could shift COB and COP and when you put the weight on it at the spot I turned, and throw longpoint, it feels like you are holding a montante (big sword), and no ceiling scuffs, then he can do his shillelagh movements for strength etc. and get shoulder mobility. So I like playing and making things I can't get elsewhere.

5) Nostepinne that just came off lathe the other week in black palm--someone mentioned you can bleach black palm with just normal household bleach and it was really cool. As soon as the oil hit, it got darker, but not as dark. This will probably be my first question after I have searched the forums--I have trouble parting a spindle elegantly if I have finished it on the lathe, like here. How do you make the base more elegant? I will search.

6) Before and after home bleaching black palm. I will use a different finish that shouldn't change the color next time.

7) Again my own thing--I took a nostepinne, and added a WPI on the handle, and a darning egg. I call it the nostedolk in cherry--so my sister in law can hit my brother when he walks by. She is always doing something with yarn, but here so those who didn't know nostepinne can see function. You make your own center pull yarn balls, so you can put in a yarn bowl or bag, and they pull out easy. Very old tool.

8) Nostepinne also for sister in law because she wanted a smaller head, this time in Zirocote. The thing is that if you post a photo, then all your yarn relations want one.
But it is good practice for me aside from making a lot of pens and those sorts of small turnings.
I buy a lot of kits and things clearance or get whatever wood i can cheap or free, and I play and learn.
Like I went and bought the Lignum, but the guy is an old time carpenter and he gifted me a whole SUV full of his "scraps" which for me are crafting gold.
Then I bought a few more spindles from him and we did it again.
So I keep my eye out so I can play over time.
I have way too many machines and running out of space for material too.
I wasn't turning over COVID so I was collecting things.
