Surburbia approaches.....

Welcome back.

We moved to where we are living 15 years ago because we liked the country feel of the place.
BUT....................

Suburbia is fast approaching the town.
We feel we have the need to move once the shop ( Craporium ) is sold.

We have always wanted the self sufficient life style, you know, chooks, veggies, make your own power etc.
Somehow we got stuck here ( Northern Melbourne ), we were at one stage heading for Qld.
Bundy looked good for a long while, but is too humid is summer.

Anyway, has anyone here done the self sufficient life style thing?

Don't matter where you live in Oz there will be residential development.

Qld is too hot in summer.
Melbourne is too cold in winter.

Sydney is the pits.

BTW there is snow and ice in NSW and QLD.
Its not confined to Vic or Tasssy

Tass looks good, all I got to do is convince the missus.

G'day Al,

I spent about a year in the early '90s just sailing around, mostly Indian Ocean, Southern Ocean, and Atlantic. That's pretty sulf-sufficient as there wasn't any more than four people on board at any one time, and sometimes just two (i.e. moi plus one). Trouble was, they were all blokes, so some "shore time" was required :D

I love the idea of being quite independent from industrial/business life (maybe a darksider thing), to but not sure how I'd get a water/wind/solar generator to crank out enough for the Table Saw:confused:

well Oz our house is on the market here in Tas . 10 acres with a creek you could run a small turbine of , crayfish , platapus and trout in the creek, 60 fruit trees , pig pens , chook shed , 100 square meter workshop , 100 square meter hothouse with orange trees and mandarines , sweet potato tomatoes etc .
Lovely climate Tasmania

Bundy's not too bad Al, but it's getting close to the warm bits....at your age, shouldn't you be looking for somewhere close to a hospital? :D :D

There are plenty of places in SEQ which can't be urbanised for at least 20 years because of the ramifications of the SEQ regional plan, the Gommint says ya can't!!

As for temps, the AVERAGE MAXIMUM January temp is a mere 4° higher than Melbourne, but the ACTUAL maximum is about 10° lower!!

Tassy.
Moved from Qld 2 .1/2 years ago.

Smithton area.

Built a two storey mud brick back in the mid 80''s about 30km out of Bairnsdale, solar powered and I designed the regulator for the big 2 volt batterries, one of the first MOSFETS around as most were using a big zener as an excuse for regulation.
Solar hot water was with big coils of 19mm black poly on the roof and heating was done with wood and a 'hothouse' with a bluestone block that got hot in the sun and pumped heat through.
This area suddenly became trendy and we started getting neighbours then power came through, then we got roads and rates went up.
I got transferred to Melbourne, then 3 years ago we moved here.
A nice compromise at the moment, about 1km out of town, close enough to get what we want but too far for the dickheads to come and annoy us.
But developement is underway with acouple of 1/4 acre and 1 acre estates on the move.
Tassy is nice but bloody expensive if you want to go interstate for a few days.
Have to add the price of getting the car and the family across and back, done it the other way a few times and found it prohibitive.

Ms. Grunt and I are planning to go back to nature next year.

We've got 30 acres on the Campaspe River at Redesdale. We're putting the Romsey house on the market in Feb and when that sells, I'll quit work and become Farmer Grunt.

We're buying a caravan in the new year to live in for the short term. I'm going to build a Straw Bale house and set up a purmaculture garden. Plant olive trees, grapes and about 100 fruit trees. Squish the olives to make bio-diesel to run the tractor.

We're planning to be self sufficient if we wanted to within 5 years.

Al - Have a look at Biloela, Qld. Cold in winter, not so humid in summer. I rate it.
