Sealing the Dining Table

I am in the process of scraping down the Cypress dining table top for a new sealing coat. I made this table about 10 years ago and since then it has been sanded and had a couple of coats of water based polyurethane.

It is situated on the verandah where it does get a bit of winter sun and the odd misting in stormy weather, not to mention the occasional visit and marking by the local possum.

It is still coming up very nicely with the scraping and I feel there is probably a better finish I can apply. Keeping in mind we are in a semi rural situation and would like a reasonably quick drying solution to avoid dust and leaf deposits.

Open to suggestions from the brains trust and hoping that an oil finish of some variety is possible this time.

Why not just oil it? no more scraping, easy to apply, easy to clean and when required you can recoat in just a few minutes.

Thanks double.d but it needs a good scrape to get rid of a tatty looking surface. Some flaking sealer and the odd mouldy spot. It is used all the time as a general outdoor dining and all purpose table.
What oil would you suggest?

Yes, you would need to scrape all the poly off and then sand to 240g. I would recommend Constantia Organic Finishes 100 % Australian organic oils and waxes. The Chinese ( by name only) Wood Oil is good for interior and exterior applications.

How about an outdoor Spar Marine poly for boats/decks?

If the furniture is outside, its essentially a deck or a boat :)

Hi Dareen - I have just done a similar table, similar position.
Used Livos Natural Wood Sealer on it.(Many coats). Seems to be holding well.
Am doing another one trialing Evan Dunstone's recipe - in Woodsmith #157 - which uses a mix of the Livos Natural Oil Sealer, Spar Marine Varnish and Turps.
