The Weight of Things - Mattresses

We purchased a Queen-size mattress some ten years ago and it has served us very well over this time.
Unfortunately, we have found it more and more difficult to make our bed or change the bedding because of its weight.
Changing sheets is a bit of an ordeal now: I lift the mattress while SWMBO attempts to tuck the sheet under.

As a result of this gymnastics, we are considering buying a lighter one, if we can find one!!!

I have surfed the web to find information about the various types available, specifically with regard to weight, without a great deal of success.

Any suggestions will be most gratefully received!!!

Hi Yvan

We also had trouble making our bed because of 2 main reasons.
1. weight of mattress
2. the mattress was inset in the bed frame so had to be lifted.
#2 was starting to hurt my fingers, a bit of arthritis and hard timber frame didn't help.
Our answer was to buy a new bed where the mattress sits on and can be slid (bumped :) ) just enough to fit the sheet.

Dont suggest she moves to spare room it does not go down well.... I am staying inside telling neighbours I have covid, ...bruising will subside :oo:

My suggestion would be to go some where like "Makin Mattresses" ( who make many of the well known brands any way ) and try before you buy, I mention Makin Mattresses only because I have had very good service from them

Same here. My fingers and wrists do not like making beds anymore particularly with heavy mattresses! We bought an Ecosa online a couple of years ago. One of those that gets delivered to the door in a box. It had 3 different top layers that can be configured to give you a firm, medium or soft mattress. I love firm but we went with the medium configuration as hubby felt like he was lying on the road outside! It is still nice and firm enough for me. Because of the ability to the change the firmness I thought I could risk buying it before trying.

Our daughter recently bought an Emma mattress online and she was extremely sceptical before it arrived. She loves it and it is much lighter and easy to make. She totally shattered her wrist playing non-contact footy some years ago and always has issues with lifting heavy objects etc.

We were in the same position a few years ago. When we went to a few bed shops for a new one the first thing we did when we found one that felt comfortable was to lift it to feel the weight. Rejected a few we liked the feel of because they were too heavy.

Oh Lord!
We had a foam mattress. SWMBO wanted a new one. I told her it would get heavy because of the sweat that gets accumulated. Now she wants a new mattress. OK. Pick one out and have the store deliver and remove the old one. You cannot believe the male bovine excrement.

We have a queen size on a flat base.
Same as Verawood said can be slid around etc.
Made the bed myself MDF and 150 square hardwood legs.
Not fancy but it works.

It is a bit catch-22. The latex foam mattresses are really comfortable, and the=y are very stable. One person turning over does not usually throw the other onto the floor! But they weigh a ton and are very awkward to handle. Like trying to lift a bag of porridge! Removalists dread them so I am told.
We opted for a lighter-weight mattress when we moved house six months ago and now about to change again because I keep waking my wife up when I turn over. Apparently I am not attentive enough when I am asleep!

I don't know what beds used to be like in Switzerland, but my experience of many German beds is that they have a semi sprung base (pre-bent timber slats), with a very thin mattress. Much lighter, though perhaps a little firmer than many are used to. I love sleeping on them though.

We currently own a thick latex mattress. Excellent in every way except that it's oh so heavy.
