Salutations (and Query)

Hi All

Thank you for letting me into the forum.

I'm a humble new beginner in Altona (been self-teaching over the last year or so). I dabble mainly in woodturning with a goal to do a bit of joinery in the future. I'm also a registered building designer (Victoria) by trade.

Unique Woodturned Items From Local/Recycled Timbers by RDWoodWorx

One of the things I've been working on are cups/mugs suitable for drinking coffee/tea from.

I'm using shellac to seal/polish the cups and having great success as long as the temperature of the liquid is no hotter than 60-70 degrees (ok for a Flat White or Latte). Now ... if I want to go hotter than this, are there any food safe products that can be used or recommended? I would prefer a natural solution but will look at synthetics if that is an only option.

A google search and read of a few forums turned up the usual advise that was a mix of quality at best but this thread Wooden drinking vessels for hot liquids | Woodworking Talk had at least two ideas, one being actually use an insert and the wood becomes decorative or use epoxy that may last a while.
even ubeaut polishes doesn't seem to have anything suitable on first read.

It's the heat from boiling water that will get things like shellac and beeswax leaching straight out into the coffee/tea
