Shout-out to SJE Tools - planer carbide inserts

Just replaced the HSS cutters in my Hafco TS13S thicknesser with a carbide set from SJE. (These will also fit any Accu-Head thicknesser, including Carbatec 13" Spiral Head (CT330X/TH-BX330P/40200H/40300H)).

Great service - they turned up the next day, despite usual delays I am experiencing from other suppliers during these Covid times.

Also a stellar price - a full set at about 1/3 of the Hafco /Carbatec spare parts cost.

They also stock planer/jointer straight knives, inserts fro Byrd/Shellix heads & replacements for carbide insert lathe tools.

Cut quality is much better than the standard HSS cutters, not to mention a WAY longer life.

I have the same thicknesser and the cutters from Steve made a huge difference, also cut the noise down a bit I found, probably cause the HSS were pretty blunt. ;-)

Hi Guys - thanks for the likes. For the photo requests, not sure what to tale a picture of - there isn't really anything to see in the thicknesser - one installed they look just like the HSS cutters.

This is what they look like before installing, they come in well protected packaging - little slide out plastic drawers.

Fully agree. I bought a brand new Carbatec CT330X 3 or 4 years ago along with a set of Steve’s TC blades and swapped out the factory HSS ones before a single piece of wood went through it. They’ve passed a fair bit of redgum through tem and are still on their first edge.

My Hafco T13S with the carbide cutters is far and away my favourite tool. Just blows me away how it turns any old chunk of wood into something useful and with such ease. Been using it a year now, and I see no deterioration so far. Way better than the old 318mm twin blades unit I had before.

I use these. Excellent quality of finish but i do struggle with 'track marks' after replacing a full set of cutters even using the upgraded screws sje sells.

I had that problem too in a couple of spots, and it turned out I hadn't cleaned the resin off the head properly before fitting the new cutters. Might be worth checking that the heads clean and they are all seated properly?

Interesting. When I got my Hafco, I took the HSS off immediately, still have them in a box somewhere, and fitted the carbide cutters, and the finish has always been perfect. I don't recall any resin coating being present, just oil I think. It would make sense that any muck would make the cutters sit proud and therefore cut a channel, but has not been my experience with the one and only time I've done it.

The resin buildup is from running timber through over time. I used the HSS ones to death, so I should have cleaned it better when I first changed to the carbide ones.

But what a massive difference the carbide ones make, just brilliant!

I was only saying to someone a few days ago that my Hafco T13S is my far and away favourite tool in the shed. To have a perfect job come out of it every time with so little effort is a joy.

I suppose a day will come that I have to rotate the cutters 90 degrees to utilise the second edge, but I see no sign of it yet:)

I doubt you have overtightened them . . . as general they will snap in half if you do that! Carbide is very hard but that makes it extremely brittle.

I would advise to examine each one as you tighten them and see if any of them twist slightly (as per my video on the screws) - it sounds possible that you might have some head machining issues and the inserts aren't sitting flush to the back edge.

Minor request and wasn't that hard to check but any chance you could update the description to show they also fit the JN-BX150P and JN-BX200P carbatec jointers

12 needed for the BX150
16 needed for the BX200

I've just ordered 16 for the jointer as i'm expected to run a lot of hardwood flooring over it over xmas

A thank you goes out to the team, a 16 pack of new cutters arrived yesterday so this weekend i'll replace the existing HSS ones and check out the difference on the 8" Jointer.
