Greetings from Port Stephens NSW

Hi everyone,
I have just returned from working OS for the last 23years and arrived here with a bit of an ulterior motive. My father passed away 11 years ago, he was the family master craftsman. So I am now on a mission to make mum happy and clean up the shed. There is a huge amount of timber, one of his favorites was Australian red cedar as well as more tooling most could poke a stick at. I would say all the timber is ready to use and has probably been in this shed for minimum 12-15 years. No idea where to start as this is going to be a project of mammoth proportion, though as with most projects, we just chip away piece by piece. I can identify some timber, but most I cannot, so in time I hope reaching our here may shed some light on the unknown.

There are quite a good few members around the Hunter & up the north coast with heaps in the Sydney area plus the rest of the country.....
You'll find a heap of helpful & knowledgeable blokes & ladies on the forum and for most very willing to assist.

Welcome.

Your first decision will be how to sell -- I'm presuming you do want to sell -- the timber.
The quantity of timber your dad had would be appreciated by a wholesaler who would probably offer something significantly less than wholesale for the lot. The discount on wholesale value would reflect the wholesaler's costs to sort and stack what would normally be delivered to them in pack lots.
So while a cubic metre of Aus Red Cedar might wholesale for $5,000 per cube, the wholesaler might only offer you less than $3,000 per cube. Only you can decide if getting rid of your dad's timber stash to keep your mum happy is worth the steep discount on the retail realisable price.


Your dad's workshop tooling is another matter. Based on his dust collection he knew what he was doing and probably has some very decent machines. I can see what looks like a fairly big bandsaw and also what looks like a vertical panel saw. So the tooling is definitely two or three steps above hobby grade.
Unless you wish to keep some or all of the machinery I suggest you:
1. offer selected pieces to the local Men's shed as a donation on the condition it be used and not on sold within say four years. Note that few Men's sheds have the cash to actually buy your dad's machinery.
2. offer the items individually for sale on this forum. Depending on what the item is and its condition, you could expect to get between 30 and 80% of current retail price. Your dad has been deceased for 11 years so it's unlikely his table saw was a SawStop so expect a very steep discount when you come to sell it. On the other hand if his saw is a European slider you might be able to get more than 50% of current retail.
3. sell the items on a site like Gumtree.


Now your dad almost certainly has a collection of hand tools that will vary from wood chisels worth between $1 and $500 each (yes a very wide variation, the upper end would be if he had name brand Japanese chisels) and hand planes again worth anywhere between $10 and several hundred dollars. Plus assorted screw drivers, files, screws, etc.
