Custody
A man and his wife were getting a divorce at a local court, but the custody of their children posed a problem.
The mother jumped to her feet and protested to the judge that since she had brought the children into this world, she should retain custody of them.
The man also wanted custody of his children, so the judge asked for his side of the story.
After a long moment of silence, the man rose from his chair and replied:
"Your Honor, when I put a coin into a vending machine, and a Coke comes out, does the Coke belong to me or to the machine?
HE WON THE CASE.

Really can't see the joke in this one and think it might offend some members. The analogy is not even close as the coke machine doesn't contribute anything to the making of the coke and doesn't go through any pain and suffering of storage or delivery. Sorry but it's a "joke" from couple of generations back - times have thankfully moved on.

Hi Bob, The joke, how I see it, is how the judge awarded him the custody because of a stupid answer. Pointing out that judges are REALLY out of touch with reality. You only have to look at the way they're handing out minimum punishments for a serious crimes. How many times do we hear of a person commiting a crime/s that they're out on bail for, yet again, for the same offences!!!!

Have to agree, its definitely out of place :iagree:

Maybe a moderator will move it to O. S.

The inference being that the man considers his wife to be in no way superior to a coke machine. She should have gone him for defamation. No wonder she wants a divorce.

Reporting of sentencing is really, really poor in this country. The journalists spin everything they can to try and make a scandal. Bad mistakes are rare and usually cleaned up on appeal. You never hear about appropriate sentences - only a journo attempting to make a meal out of an outlier.

Maybe "practising barrister"'s perspective is different to us who have had our houses knocked off, bikes and cars stolen.
My place got done in 2016. They were spotted by the chippies building a house next door. Police got rego and description, could only link 1 of the 4 to the crime. Repeat offender did no time and I got none of my stuff back.
I've been hit 5 times since 2002. Why wouldn't you keep stealing when there are no consequences ?
BOT: It's a joke. Are we really that easily offended?

Mate my comment was in response to sentencing. Ie what happens when people are caught and charged successfully.
Not about rates of police catching thieves which is a whole different thing.
-
My comment was about that also. Even when convincingly linked to the crime at my place and with previous convictions she walked, to do it again and again.I see it all the time, first hand.

They can't keep them in too long or the poor darlings will start having withdrawal symptoms.
