Suggestions for finishing a chess board

Have made an end grain blackwood / huon chess board and am looking for suggestions for a finish. The board is a wedding present for a niece and both her and her husband are busy young folk who don't have a lot of woodworking knowledge. I want a finish that is clear (non yellowing), durable and low sheen. If it were for me I would use white shellac then wax but am unsure how well it will age with minimal maintenance. One other option I am considering is nitro cellulose lacquer.
Any thoughts?

Odies oil/butter might help you here, But it won't give you a super gloss finish.

If you want quick and easy, have a look at Mirotone Spraylac. I've used it for a few small items and it's got a really nice satin finish, much better than the hardware store spray can stuff.

3-4 light coats with a quick rub with 240 grit between.

Thanks havabeer, The oils I have had experience with are brown in colour and will darken a light wood like huon. Are the Odies oils any different?

They all go a bit yellow eventually, can't say I've noticed it much but it's a gradual process so it's hard to tell over a few years. As long as it's kept out of direct sunlight I think it will be quite acceptable.

Blackwood goes yellow all by itself after a while and Huon is kinda yellow to start with so... :shrug:

Rustins Plastic Coating is Ideal for that I have coffee table I finished 20 years ago and it has not yellowed, I have re-polished the top once but it is a high gloss, Rustins can be finished from a matt finish up to a glass like finish
