Compatibility??

Just a question for those who use spray cans more than I do.

I have a project nearing completion which I felt was too small for a spray gun task and decided to use what was on hand.

The question is this, have sprayed an organ pipe with non ferrous etch primer (it’s made of solid zinc) and sprayed the pipe with White Knight gold acrylic enamel, I need to pick out the mouth of the pipe in black as a contrast. I have a can of Accent gloss black enamel, are there any compatibility issues with enamel over acrylic enamel?

Propellants appear to be the same, one says DME and the other says Dimethyl Ether + other bits. Mineral turps is the recommended clean up solvent.

Any thoughts much appreciated.

All sorrts of crap come in spray cans! Etch primer is NOT going to be solid zinc - you will note the cans of galvanising zinc by the extreme weight difference. Will not be "gold" either-nor acrilic enamel. should have prehaps gone with a black etch primer. Presuming thr rest of the pipes are polished or clear finished. safest bet is to strip to raw and refinish. Dont realy see why black required.

I think the reason was obvious in the post.

Thanks for the replies, the organ pipe is the solid zinc, the primer is a Killrust product designed for non ferrous metals and has adhered well. I have sprayed the gold (acrylic enamel) but will need to pick out the mouth of the pipe in black which is the enamel.

According to a paint site on the WEB

”You can apply enamel to an acrylic surface but not acrylic to an enamel top coated surface, you can apply acrylic paints to an enamel/oil based primer or enamel/oil based undercoat.”

I did a hunt for the info but obviously not in the correct places.

Will post some pix when finished.

Finally finished, put together and in situ.

This is to try and help getting some maintenance money for an Alexander Young 1890 English pipe organ. I believe it is the only one of its kind left in working order in Australia. Any little donations help to ensure this fine instrument keeps going. (Don’t understand why this is sideways but I don’t appear to be able to correct it.)
