10 members met in the RSL lounge on Monday 26th November. As the last Monday in December, was NYE we decided that the next get-together at the RSL would be Monday 25th February 2019. January 28th would clash with DaveTTC’s “Whatcha dooen in Dooen” GTG over the Australia Day long weekend. https://www.woodworkforums.com/f303/...weekend-218153.
The November meeting commenced with a review of our activities during 2018 and some discussion on possible activities for 2019. During 2018, Matt (simplicity) and Doug (doug3030) hosted GTGs in their “sheds” which were well attended and appreciated. Both have indicated that they would be willing to do so again this year. “Show and tell” features prominently at all GTGs where some attendees will show off their latest projects – Dale (DSEL74) bought along a collection of miniature brass anvils which he had molded and cast / forged; Peter (sturdee) has been turning miniature lighthouses; and of course the is the inevitable display of pens which results in an enthusiastic discussion on the “best” finish- CA, oil, wax or some favorite recipe.
Members also have an eclectic mix of interests outside of woodworking including knife making; vintage tool collecting; handsaw making, restoration and sharpening; metal working, and photography to mention few. And there is always time to just “chew the fat” and enjoy the company of others with similar interests.
A number of potential objectives for 2019 were discussed at the November meeting:
• Increase the number of members
• Become more inclusive with more ladies and members from the other sub-groups within the wood working forums
• Joint activities with the metal working forums
• Visit(s) to suppliers including demonstration of products, tools etc. - e.g. Ubeaut, CWS, Pop’s Shed, Carbatec, Hare & Forbes
• Appoint a “leader” for each meeting at the RSL who will be responsible for defining a theme for the evening and ‘advertising’ the event to ensure that more members are aware of our activities.
• Arrange additional “member’s shed” activities where members can demonstrate / show off their equipment, tools and projects.
So while we rest and relax and recover from the excesses of the Christmas dinner and NYE activities, can I ask you to reflect on whether you would be interested in joining our meetings? Some members meet before the meeting for a meal in the RSL dining room. Wives, husbands, partners, girlfriends, boyfriends, concubines, mistresses, etc. are welcome – although we ask that you limit yourself to bringing just one of the above to any one function.
We meet at 7.00pm (6.00ish if having a meal first) on the last Monday of the month and generally end up by around 9 -9.30pm.
Venue: RSL, 26 -28 Nelson Rd, Box Hill Vic 3128.
