Can UBeaut Aussie Oil & Shellawax be used on parts of same piece?
Recently I was asked to make a pair of memorial urns and a scattering urn for a deceased forum member.
Being mainly turned, the memorial urns were easily finished with Shellawax (Cream & Glo) but the scattering urn proved to be more of a headache.
The concept was to appear much like a coach lantern, with turned top (inc. lid) and base, but panels of lighter timbers & beading around the sides, emulating glass panes. I'd intended to blonde shellac the whole thing, however I couldn't find anything apart from cheap (& gritty) orange shellac locally.
That wasn't suitable for many reasons, primarily because I wanted the light-coloured panels to stay as light as possible. (I usually stock a range of UBeaut shellacs and finishes, but with recent 'geographical relocations' my stocks have run low on almost everything.)
Eventually I spray-pac'd it with NC but I wasn't happy with the result... it raised the nap and, unfortunately, I didn't have the time to rub it back properly and go through the normal NC finishing routine.
Funerals are like that... come unexpectedly and have an inbuilt deadline. No pun intended. ;)
Anyways, enough waffle... :rolleyes: on to the gist of the matter:
What I'm curious about whether I could've Shellawax'd the turned sections on the lathe, assembled it with the unfinished panels, done light sanding to merge the beads into the turnings (this is where my problems lie!) and then hand-rubbed Aussie Oil into the unfinished sections and where I'd blended the beads into the finished turning without too much visual discrepancy?
Has anyone here tried doing similar? If so, what were the results?
FWIW, the scattering urn did come up alright for all my complaints about it; people appeared pleased with the "timber feel" but I know it could've been a lot better. And it was for a good friend...
