This was an opportunity buy so now I want to work out how to recondition it. The latch for the meat safe is broken so looking for supplier of them. I was thinking with the paint that I should just wash down and lightly sand before applying a new coat of matching colours. I was just going to brush on the paint. I'm looking for advice on how to do this as I'm normally into exposing wood grain not covering it :) BTW how can I stop the photo's loading sideways?:C

I'll leave the answers to others but your cupboard just started a flood of memories from my childhood of both my grandmothers homes and their kitchens with the same style of cupboard
There will be conflicting thoughts on this project. If this very nice piece was mine, I would not necessarily be repainting it, but scrubbing down the existing finish, and keeping as much of the original look as possible ... assuming that the existing paint is original. I'd research this.
If you do plan to repaint, then it would be best that all the pain is removed as the transition points - where paint has flaked or chipped off - will later stand out like a sore thumb.

Looking at in the dark with a torch I found the surface on one side has that sort of crazing the seem to want with this antique paint work they do now. I will get a second opinion tomorrow but I believe this is original and I may have to take your guidance with the clean and keep it as is. The meat locker latch and another need replacing and then all the leadlight needs to have some repairs. I'll post progress when I get back to it. For now I have started stripping ugly paint off a wardrobe to find some nice cut of silky oak :)

a word of caution.
it's quite possible that the paint on those cupboard doors contains lead or cadmium
Re missing latch - I would looking at recycling yards. You may end up needing to buy more than you want for one catch (and end up with a heap of spares).
