Disney French Polish

Always one to try new things and experiment I bought some Disney French Polish from Bunnings. I had heavily sanded a silky oak sideboard to become my study TV stand. Everything was going fine until I realised the Disney French Polish of the silky oak top was not uniform by any means. In fact it was splotchy (new English word maybe). I sanded layer back with 320 grit and applied another layer. Nope. In the end I drowned it in Meths and started removing it. I will go back to the old shellac from Carbatec and do it the trusted way. The good news the first 2 items I have done are for practice for the good items later like dining room table.

Anybody tried this Disney French Polish before? Any unusual reactions? It has been cold here in Brissie (well for someone spent to many years in jungles).

Recovered nicely with Meths for clean up and then new bottle of Feast Watson. 6 layers later happy with the recovery. I'll leave it a day before polishing.

Just noticed this thread. What Feast Watson product did you use? I was looking at their Shellac flakes but am now trying to buy blonde dewaxed.

Too dark and cold to go and check now but it is the bottle of liquid French polish. I need to find some denatured meth's before I use the flakes.

So many questions:rolleyes: looks like we are learning by trial and error:D The experts seem to be on holidays.
How do you feel about using premix French polish shellac vs mix your own?
Does the Feast Watson French Polish change the colour much?

It has been a long time since my own mix but I think it was better. I went with the premix for convenience sake and because I always experiment.
The Feast Watson French polish just added a touch of blonde to things. I really should get too and add their tint and see how it goes.

Yesterday I found a layer of the premix went very wrong with bubbles everywhere. While it was frustrating on the table top it was a disaster on one of the legs. Looks like that table will be cleaned back again. For the table top I could say something misted over it but on the leg it was well protected.

All part of the learning.

How long between coats? Were they touch dry or as recommended dry?

I have not used Feast Watson so can not comment on their product; I have done the mix your own and have used the hard Shellac from Ubeaut. In both I tend to leave overnight between coats or one on some occasions I will apply one coat in the morning and one in the evening providing the temperature is not too cold.

In the end I think there was something in the wood as the same problem occurred with the Feast Watson (just less pronounced.) On the second round I decided to keep adding layers of shellac and the problems just got less and less. I would clean down each time using steel wool. Top is finished now and I will get back to the legs eventually. I usually had 12 to 24 hrs between layers.

needed to get some wardrobes done for use. They were a different set of challenges. Cleaning the old wax and alike off has been my greatest challenge. I will try the Disney again later. For now it's back to work and this sort of thing will go slower again as I can only do it on the weekends when I am at home during the day and the temps up enough.

So how did the Disney shellac go?
I bought some 500ml taskmaster shellac from bunnings last week for 6.60 each. They are hermetically sealed so should be up to the task of mid term storage. But at that price i couldnt resist....started using one bottle and all seems okay.
