Whatever happened to the idea that Hydrogen fuel cells were the answer to our fuel problems?
Something missing from the headlines is the stride mage by smaller countries towards reducing emissions.
Costa Rica went 25 full days with renewables last year and had many more hours in the same vein.
Great strides have also been made in Denmark with wind providing significant amounts of the energy requirements there.
Meanwhile our polies are more hell bent than ever on scoring points. It seems as though nothing is any longer done for
the benefit of the country.

Moving towards renewable energy sources is all well and good but unless we re-design our antiquated electricity networks and the way they are managed we're just going to end up with a disaster on our hands. Last year's blackouts here in South Australia proved what can happen when you try and bolt on 21st century energy sources to a 19th century network.
Um; I would say that Sunday April 30th in Germany was probably a rather unique day; with lots of wind, sunshine, a spring tide and (because it was a Sunday) a heavily reduced commercial load. The phrase "most of Germany's coal-fired power stations weren't operating on (that day)" is also misleading. A coal powered station can't be just switched on and off; they take hours if not days to come up to capacity and have to be cooled down gently. If they were actually "off" it was as planned shutdown activities. It more likely meant they just weren't actually exporting power to the grid; but coal would still have been feeding the boilers and the turbines would still have been spinning.
Yes; Denmark is chockers full of windmills. So is Holland and having been in both countries I can honestly say they are the ugliest visual blight you could force on any country. With the possible exception of adding trump to Mount rushmore; anyway. Notwithstanding their extreme repulsiveness they have proven to be effective BUT they only supplement the pre-existing power stations; they don't replace them and never will because sometimes the wind...stops.

Without being sarcastic did any of these days happen to coincide with shutdowns (planned or otherwise) which effectively forced the country to rely on 100% solar/wind/tidal power? And was 100% of the grid available 100% on those days?
I'm not against renewables or "alternate" sources at all; I have solar on my house, solar battery powered external lighting and I use the most energy efficient appliances and fittings where practicable and available. Admittedly it's because I don't want to pay for power but the end result is the same; my imported power "footprint" is reduced. And I detest waste; one thing I really miss from the UK is the domestic recycling system. I am however against rabid environmentalism. It's the new Christian Fundamentalism; all full of twisted statistics and chanted mantras and if you dare question anything the Inquisition start gathering the kindling.
Climate Change is an inescapable fact; the only argument is about how much of it can be attributed to human activity. If the human race had been wiped out by Galloping Ebola back in the 12th century would there be any difference in sea levels, atmospheric Co2 content and average temperatures from what we are seeing today? Fossil records show that climatically nothing is new; Earth has been at times a paradise and at others a living hell. 40 years ago at school I was taught we were still coming out of the last ice-age and expected to continue to do so for least a couple of centuries more before temperatures plateaued.
It's not just fossil records that record climate change. Over the last 40 years there have been huge developments in the use of paleotemperature "proxies" such as carbon 13 to produce high resolution records of temperature change in the past. Science doesn't stand still....back in the mid 70's when I did my degree plate tectonics was relatively new...now it's an accepted fact.Quote:
