The main point I think is that it saves the "liker" from having to post "nice work" or "that's funny" etc. So for me, that means I can show my appreciation of many more posts than I would otherwise respond too. It also saves the subscribed threads from getting out of control (or having to unsubscribe) after posting an appreciative comment. That then saves the thread from being clogged up with lots of similar comments, when the appreciation can all be seen in one neat line.
For example, someone posts a pic of some finished work that I think is good - if I am subscribed to it I get a notification every time someone else thinks it's good too - and I'm not particularly interested in the subsequent "that's good" comments. If I just give it a like then I receive no more notifications. As I usually peruse the forum through "New Posts" and one for that thread comes up, I can choose if I want to have another look at the comments or not.
