About waxing

Hi. I am new to wax.

I have built a tray using Victorian Ash. One side has a significant feature as pictured. My future son-in-law said years ago, whilst working in a business that made table tops out of slabs, they would fill the gaps with clear wax so you could see the feature whilst keeping a level surface.

I understand the logic of that. He suggested I should also fill in the side but I see no reason to. Also I like the feel of the finish which using wax would be lost.

There is however a small but slightly deeper recess in the feature that would probably suit a bit if wax in it.

If I am on the right track, what kind of wax would one use? Is wax self levelling? (I am finishing the sides of the tray with poly satin.)

Waxes melt in the range of 55C - 65C, with very few exceptions. And, they're soft.
I suggest that a modern clear epoxy would be a far better service filling for voids of that sort.

Thanks -so my future son-in-law got his waxes mixed up with this epoxies. Anyone in OZ, please can you suggest a suitable expoxy as I am new to that also.

West Systems is a good epoxy

Have a talk to Whitworth Marine at Port Adelaide. They have clear epoxies used in boat building etc. which should suit your project.

Thanks. KNow the place. My son has been there a few times (for his boat) so I might give them a ring and see what they have before going to Carbatec.

Who knows? They might fill your wood voids with leftovers from a boat project.
