Result of lifting faceshield before turning lathe off

As mentioned in the woodturning section.. had a hmm very close contact with a nice chunk of red gum... all good now but end result was ... broken nose.. and bruised fist...
Lifted face shield prior to turning lathe off... and as I've approached it... and literary a moment before me hitting the stop button... the red gum vase decided to explode.. Naturally as Murphy's law dictates.. copped the larges piece right in the middle of my face... several stitches and broken nose later.. (with the trip to the emergency) was off shed duty for about a month or so (nose was too sensitive to dust etc).Lesson learned... Dont lift the faceshield until lathe has stopped turning.. :)

Out of interest how was the vase being held on the lathe.

Although you got lucky, a broken nose is better that a lost eye.

I have actually screwed it in... with 6 screws... and screws did not give in as on inspection screws still had fair bit of wood on them.. My suspicion is that the wood had some internal crack which was going through the whole thing somewhere within the wall .. so as I've turned the outside and hollowed it.. I most likely came to within millimeters from uncovering the crack while working on it...
As I was putting the was i've increased the speed to add that extra sparkle... and sparkle it was... Centrifugal force was stronger than the holding power of the remaining of the wall and it just disintegrated on its own without me touching it. Upon explosion it pretty much ripped itself out of those screws.... Two of them ended up completely bent most likely as one piece bounced of my hand into the last remaining piece knocking it out of the face plate...
Vase was about approx 160mm diameter x about 220mm height
I didn't go with the usual chuck / dovetail hold as it was my first time working on red gum and also it was a test piece too...

Surprisingly it did not hurt at all at the beginning.. two days later big migraine and blocked sinuses... Lots of blood though... :(
and I'm not an easy bleeder...

Same thing occurred to me. Same process, broken bones, severe puffiness.

Here you can see my head has put on a bit of weight :)

Now I use a good high impact face shield. The shop looked like a horror movie scene. :)
