So after weeks of research and planning tomorrow I am jumping in the deep end. I'm off to purchase a Bosch GTS10J and a bunch of plywood and will be starting on my first bench working off the design for Rock Solid Plywood Bench from Fine Woodworking.

BTW
your Bosch saw may not be the best way to break down sheets of ply.
If you can get it cut to size by the supplier.

Yes, that is a really nice design and probably one of the cheaper ways of getting a good sturdy bench. A lot of woodworkers sniff at ply but just ignore them :)Quote:

Ian's advice is sound Jay. If you have a cut sheet, work out the major cuts before you get to the hardware store and get them to at least do the cross cuts. I just did that with a 2400 x 1200 piece of MDF the other day. Bunnings cut it into 5 major pieces. I took it home and the table saw easily handled cutting them down into the 17 bits needed for the job.
Enjoy your new hobby, it's richly rewarding, as well as being frustrating at times :) but that's OK.
Looking forward to progress reports and even pics of that finished bench.
Thanks for the advice guys, i'm actually downsizing the original design due to space requirements so the pieces required aren't quite so large which meant i can get away with purchasing the ply in smaller sizes instead of the 2400x1200. Pictures to follow in the bench forum when i get a chance.

Welcome aboard mate, I came across the same article & its on my 2nd thing to do on my bucket list, 1st is to build a little workshop, I asked my local timber merchant and hes more than happy to rip up the ply for me to help me out, as no tools to be able to do that as yet, would love to see some pics and your thoughts of the bench once completed
