Oot'n'aboot in Brissie

G'day all;
I'm a displaced Canuck who married a Queenslander almost 20 years ago so here I am, in Murrumba Downs although currently doing a farm sit in Kurwongbah.

I left my two table saws behind when I left Canada for 3 years in 1980 and I haven't made it back (to live, that is). I tell people I don't know where I want to live when I grow up, but I think it will be Tasmania. Too hot in summer in Qld for a Canuck!

I came across this group looking for info on a Hafco 12" bench saw. Too expensive to ship 10" saw over. Freight is reasonable, but it costs more to have the dock handlers take it off the ship than it costs to get it here, so I've been looking for something local.

A local Men's Shed member is selling one for about $700 to $800 which is perhaps what he paid for it. They sell now for over $1100. My woodworking now is pretty much limited to cabinet making for Sprinter vans. So far I've been making do with a jig saw and hand saws. I've always liked hand tools. Just takes a little longer.

Welcome to forum and I guess by now you have thawed out. I can't believe you haven't shipped everything over sooner OR sold it all off and started again here. Hope its well stored and not sitting rusting away in ice packs LOL.

If the saw is in good nick it might be worth the $$ but for the few $$ more you'd get the latest and greatest still a few dollars in your pocket means more $$ for more tools.

I did make two shipments from Boston (cheaper than from Halifax) but was dismayed at the local costs which were higher than the freight costs! The saws are in good hands with a friend of my mother's who is free to use them.

If you were buying a table/bench saw here what model would you purchase? New I gather?

G'Day & Welcome to the Great Southern Land but being married to a Queenslander you already know that and to a top forum "Bob".
There are quite a few "Canuck" members, a stack across the S.E. Queensland and the rest of the world.....
You'll find a heap of helpful & knowledgeable blokes & ladies on the forum and for most very willing to assist.
Make sure you show off your handiwork as everyone loves a photo, especially WIP [Work In Progress] photos with build notes.

PS - While Brisbane can be warm in the summer especially for an expat Canuck have you looked at Stanthorpe and the Granite Belt area where the monkey sings sopranino in winter.
I have Canuck friends in Toronto and in Hazelton, BC both of whom laugh when I tell them it's cold in the mid single digits temperatures.....

Take a look at Hare & Forbes, Gary Pye and Gregorys for Laguna

The 12" sounds right size and if comfortable with the $$ go for it I was just pointing out age does have disadvantages with all the new attachments fitted these days.

Yes, I appreciate that Stanthorpe is a bit cooler. And as an apple eater it has other advantages besides being cooler.

We're more or less tied to Brisbane for a spell as my wife is an only child and her father had a severe stroke a few years ago. He can't drive and his wife never did. (For which we should all be thankful!) So my wife arranges lots of visiting time here and we make it our home.

I'm afraid most of my handy work is in metal, rather than wood, but a few photos are at:

How soon you looking to buy? I have a 12" woodman table/panel saw that I want to sell (downsizing) that I would be willing to let go for the price range you are chasing.

I thought I had replied to this yesterday Pearo, but I don't see it here. "Of all the things I've lost, I miss my mind the most."

I'd buy a table saw any time between now and next April when I get back from Tasmania. In the meantime I have too little time to use it.

I've been happy in Canada with an 8" 'precision' saw and 10" 'normal' table saw. I've never used a 12" saw. Nor a table saw with a 3 HP motor as many seem to have.

Where are you located? I have a van I can use to retrieve a saw if it's within a reasonable distance from Brissie.

I'm at Shorncliffe.

My plan is to downsize/upgrade (perform a wallet transplant) to a Hammer combo, but it wont be available till next Feb.

The one I have has the outrigger table.

I'm taking the train down to Gosford tomorrow to pick up another Sprinter I've purchased there. Back Friday then Sunday on to Thailand to finish up some dental work. Will be back the 25th late,then home to Canada Sept 7th. So I'll have a window after the 25th.

Is the outrigger table a fixed extension on the left side of the blade? If so, will it carry the fence? Or is it a movable table like a panel saw?

I've been to Gosford and returned with the Sprinter Pearo AND the table saw that was for sale there. Your's is a more capable saw.

The Sydney saw will do what I need to do, and should run comfortably an the 10 Amp supply to the shed where it will live. Your saw might have required an upgrade to the supply (expensive, buried cable) or a negotiation to install it in the garage attached to the house with a less expensive upgrade.

If I had not been going to Gosford I would have been down to see your saw. It all just worked out nicely for me, except for all the night driving.

All good mate, congrats on the new saw. Mine is a big one, hence the reason I am selling it. I am just about to press the go button on the Hammer, so close! Its a long wait, so was not really keen to part with the old saw too soon. Just got the old man to draw up a new cam for the fence and a mate is going to cut it out using a water jet, so will be back in action in the next couple of weeks!
