Another non woodworking question for the indigenous intelligensa.
I am making a display Album and was going to use silk on a hard cover.
But what else could look good, maybe timber but I want to use conventional bookbinding methods and not hardware type hinges.
Any suggestions.
I want something spectacular.

Try some veneer or that really thin 3-ply!? Hinge it by glueing calico to the timber and you can still stitch it to the spine.

Bob, you say that you want to use conventional book binding techniques. Can we take it that nothing is going to added to the book after it is bound, or is this going to be a photographic album. If it is the latter and the pages are to be of a reasonable weight, then you will need to have them hand stitched. Glue won't hold. By reasonable weight I mean just about anything thicker than a standard magazine page. If you settle on hand stitching then the book will not lay open like a magazine. Then again, the loose leaf photo albums you get from BigW won't lay open either if they get thick.

I may need to use a double guarded binding or other separate page hinges to ensure its layflat. Though layflats nice its not essential
Its really a book of photographson heavy paper.
I'm actually wondering how to put a piece of art canvas in yet keep it stable.
I'm not sure that a varnished canvas wont crack.
But its not an album in the normal photo album sense.
Maybe portfolio is a more apt term.
Bob, if you have not already done so, I suggest that you talk to a book binder. It is worth it if you find a good one. As part of an exhibition I held about two years ago I produced a book of original prints. The contents were produced by myself but the binding done by a binder who did a lot of restoration work as well regular binding. We spent a bit of time discussing the options, and his experience helped steer me in the right direction. The book ended up being hand stitched with a linen covered with a linen slip case. Because of the weight of the paper I had no choice other than to hand stitch. Hence my previous comments.
