Long way to go...

Hi all, thanks for the help so far - have been lurking for a few weeks now. Bought a table saw on other members advice.

I'm in the midst of a career change, have been road-testing product/furniture design for a short while. Love making real physical things more than ephemeral digital things I guess :)

Sketchup, Tage Frid's guides and a couple of small projects underway, looking fwd to seeing where it goes.

PS if anyone knows where us Victorians can get spotted gum that isn't floorboards or fence posts, I'm all ears! (making handles for some chisels I'm restoring)

Laminated 19mm might be an option

Timberzoo in heeling usually has a bunch on the shelves (shoot them an email, I've had good experiences with them)

I wondered about that - think a slip of cherry between spotted gum will hold up ok as an axe handle? Other option is steel, but I just assumed even selleys polyurethane would give up on a chisel handle or hammer handle?

If done correctly the joint should be stronger than the wood. If you fit a ferrel at the top and bottom of the handle it will be even stronger.

why spotted gum?

unless you're planning on cutting all your mortices by hand almost any wood will suffice.
