Sump oil mixed with arsenic- was this a common prevention of termites under houses?

Interesting story.. We live up in the bush and i was chatting to my neighbour about the fact that we are looking at termite inspection once a year for prevention..

He (now 84) years old advised that for his property, that he would mix arsenic powder into auto sump oil and paint the bearers and joists under his house. He outlined that this would prevent damage of bearers and joists....

Now, forgive me if i am wrong, but if i was to buy a house that had this treatment underneath I would be concerned... He (retired builder now 84) outlined that this was common practice... I beg to differ and am interested in your thoughts..
