Converting in-wall air conditioner into bookshelf considerations?

Hi guys
I have am old in wall AC that's died that won't be replaced and with winter coming acts as a big vent to outside. The wall is a double bessa block construction thus quite thick with the exterior wall undercover.
I assume they installed a lintel when installing the ac?
My plan was to make a box with shelf out of pine or other suitable wood with a trim piece on the front?
Is there anything I should consider?
