Teacher Arrested At Sydney Airport - Held in Isolation.

A secondary school teacher was arrested today at Sydney's Kingsford Smith Airport as he attempted to board an international flight while in possession of a ruler, a protractor, a pair of compasses, a slide-rule and a calculator.

At a press conference, an Australian Border Control spokesman said he believes him to be a member of the notorious extremist Al-Gebra movement. He did not identify the man, who has been charged by the Federal Police with carrying weapons of maths instruction.

'Al-Gebra can be a problem for all of us', the Spokesman said. 'They derive solutions by means and extremes, and sometimes go off on tangents in search of absolute values. They maintain secrecy by using secret codenames such "X" and "Y" and refer to themselves as "unknowns" but we have determined that they belong to a common denominator of the axis of medieval with coordinates in every country.'

When asked to comment on the arrest, Opposition Leader Bill Shorten said - "If God had wanted us to have better weapons of maths instruction, He would have given us more fingers and toes."

Fellow Labor colleagues told reporters they could not recall a more intelligent or profound statement by the Opposition Leader.

Sadly, you don't realize how true it is.


A few days ago there was an article in the paper about the need to drop the Algebra requirement for High School (12th year) graduation. I wanted to scream! Algebra is a tool that all of us use on a daily basis. Yes, really!

Example: There is a vending machine that takes folding money. The vending machine has that vital mid afternoon pick me up snack. So if you use folding money how much change should you receive after purchasing your mid afternoon pick me up?

In Algebraic terms: Folding money minus cost of pick me up equals change.

OR

Let X = change
Let $ = folding money
Let :o = pick me up

Therefore

$ - :o = X

If you don't believe or refuse to use Algebra, I have a grocery store for you. It's called 'No Algebra For Me'. I'll become wealthy selling goods and short changing everyone with the anti-Algebra belief. :U

Back in my school days, I had two maths teachers who had been bomber navigators in WW II. Try telling them that you wouldn't need algebra.

Some of the examples they used for exercises were very interesting for teenaged boys, though.

I would imagine that quite of trigonometry was thrown in for good measure.

Our maths teacher was the best ever.....with his massive big 6 or 8 band transistor ? radio he would lug in we could pick up cricket anywhere around the world... or talk about it. very little maths done

Quite so, which may explain why I studied surveying. Actually enjoyed maths and spherical trig.

I never could get maths or alge bra.
I used to get F's for most of my subjects even woodwork and metalwork, but I can make, build or repair just about anything.

This article is way out of date..

Students these days don't use any of those things these days..

They just google it.. woe betide a teenager with NO DATA on their phone, they are stuffed. The phone doubles as a ruler and set square.. and there is an App for the calculator, but they can't use it.

We will never get to the stars, because Facebook etc does not update so fast over interstellar links..
