Just Curious - under house renovation

I'm waiting for some advice in another part of the forum and thought I would ask if anyone here has ever renovated underneath a a split level home on a sloping block? What was it like? Did you have massive budget blow outs?

I currently have a 3 Bed 1 bath split level home with a garage underneath on one side and the other side is 3/4 excavated with only piers there. Recently a real estate agent was in the neighbourhood offering advice about renovations to increase the value. His suggestion was to basically turn my house into 2 levels and extend the exisiting kitchen back wall out to the rear of the house, over doubling the floor space. House would then have 6 bedroom, 2 living and 2 bath. Estimated anywhere over 700k so I'm considering the option. But I don't know of anyone who ever renovated underneath their house...
