I have come across some nice old fence palings, which I plan to make some picture/photo frames out of.
Some of them I plan to give a light sand to keep the old weathered look, and the rest i will run thru the thicknesser.
Can anyone give me some advise regarding recommended finishes for the timber. ie tung oil, bees wax, danish oil etc). I have no idea.

I prefer to simply wirebrush the palings, rinse off thoroughly, dry, then use as it. Keeps the rustic look. Sanding could mean you lose the true weathered look.

All finishes will darken the lovelly silver patina of the weathered timber.Oil finishes will tend to turn the silver colour a non desript brownie sort of shade,varnishes or poly eurothanes maybe less so, had best results with marine varnish,try first always on scrap piece first GOOD LUCK
If you use a block of wood as a sanding block and carefully sand just the high points you can get some interesting effects HAPPY CREATING:)
I take it these are hardwood , if so for the ones you run through the thicknesser I usually go with a burnishing organoil. I apply this on a pad with my palm sander as this causes the oil to heat slightly and gives a slight buffing.Quote:

I like the colours of the hardwood and using old weathered palings you get thin milled hardwood with little waste. As long as they arn't too old and dry .
