Question about unlocking an iPhone 4.....

We were overseas recently and purchased a local simcard to save upon bill shock once returned home.
Bother, the simcard wouldn't work; the store tech did some checking and said the phone is locked.
How can that be, it's a secondhand hand-me-down from my daughter 2+ years ago.

Anyways the question about unlocking an iPhone 4.....

It has been suggested to me that as long as the phone software is up-to-date, ie version 7 or higher; one just backs up the phone to iTunes and then you do a "Restore".....

Can anyone confirm or otherwise tell me if this procedure is correct, thank you in advance...

run a "Jailbreaked" iphone in various iterations, reliably.

If the phone is not crucial to business then a look at jailbreaking may be the go. It appears to be a fairly straightforward process, and since the phone is out of warranty you've nothing to lose...

Alternatively, if you know to whom the phone is locked, a call to them, with many hours of frustrating On Hold, being hung up on mutiple times, having promises made that are not kept, and all the other things that pass for customer service these days, you could try that...

Depends on what you mean by locked.

It it can be either phone company or your daughters Apple ID that is locking the phone.

First step is to identify exactly what is locking the phone, Apple ID password or telecommunications company. If it's the ID password, the only person who can unlock it is the one who knows the password unless you have receipts from the original purchase in your name

I'm pretty sure it's phone company network as I can do all other bits and pieces that i need to do; messages, calls, calender, notes, photos, skype, add apps, and do updates through linking it to my laptop & itunes....

You'll need to either jailbreak it or see if Apple can unlock it for you.

Google is your friend, you can do it without having to jailbreak it.

Mobile phones can usually be unlocked by contacting the relevant carrier. it may not cost you anything or you may be charged a fee depending on carrier and plan you're on. See here for more information: http://www.acma.gov.au/theACMA/engag...ng-your-mobile

Yep. Whomever the original phone contract was with. Simple process generally and if Telstra usually easy.
