Carnauba Wax... Food Safe?

I finish just about everything with tung oil-based finish. I vary the application technique and number of coats accordingly of course, but it's what I use about 75% of the time.

When I'm making furniture or other items which I don't intend for direct contact with food I always let the last coat fully cure and then power-buff on some carnauba wax. I use the Feast Watson Mastertouch stuff. I'm really happy with it and I've never regretted using it.

I've recently made a few chopping boards, which I don't usually do much anymore, and I was thinking I might put some wax on those as well. It would give them that nice little bit of elegance on top of the oil finish that really makes them look great.

Anyone else using a carnauba wax topcoat on their food items?

i am using the eee foodsafe stuff but carnauba SHOULD be ok .. it is after all the stuff they use to make the casings for capsules that hold medicines

That's exactly right, and you wouldn't be ingesting as much as what covers a tablet from a prep of a couple of meals.

A few scrubs with a scourer full of dishwashing liquid will make short work of the wax anyway

Yeah, that's kind of what I was thinking. It was more just for that little bit of "Wow" factor when they're given as gifts, etc.

Carnauba is a palm tree wax, should be food safe.
Petroleum-based waxes, mineral waxes, will not be.

Have you got an old junker of a steam iron for pressing clothes?
Since waxes melt at approx 50-65C, you should be able to melt the carnauba on the boards,
much in the manner of waxing cross-country snow skiis. Should soak in a little better.
