Is there a way to "Dislike" a post ?

I wondering if there is a way to "dislike" a post on this forum? The "Thanks" and "Like" functionality are great for acknowledging good posts. The "Report a Post" functionality is useful if you think that the post in some way contravenes the Forum's rules.

But if you simply dislike a post - it's not appropriate to "report" it. Not having the "dislike" functionality means that people resort to posting a wordy response so that they can express their dislike, and this approach inevitably leads to a war of words.

So, is there a "dislike" functionality hidden away somewhere on this forum ?

I guess it's like the phrase "If you can't say anything nice, don't say anything at all". Why would you want to say you dislike a post? Anyway you can always just type " I don't like this post" and be done with it.

It would probably still end in a lengthy war of words. you click dislike and then they have to ask "what do you dislike about it?"

If you like a post then usually it means that you agree with the majority of the content, and it saves a post saying "well done".

When you dislike a post it really does not convey anything by clicking a dislike button. Since you do not agree with the majority of the post it is probably better if you feel strongly enough to click a dislike button, to tell them what you do not like about it. More often than a war of words it develops into an exchange of ideas, healthy debate and people learn from it.

I dont think disliking posts would be of much benefit, except maybe for bad jokes in the jokes forum :U.

Perhaps being able to ignore indivdual posters would be more appropriate, but from what I have seen in my short time regulary visiting these forums is that everyone is level headed and simply looking for a healthy exchange of ideas, advice, and help.

That facility IS available.

Go to your Settings (top menu bar) and click on Edit Ignore List, then add the members' forum name to that list.

Personally I think it would be far more impolite to "dislike the post"
If you don't like something or disagree with the post maybe you should should say what your issue is or failing that bite your lip and say nothing.

I think the main point of any forum is so we can all learn from each other, we all come from different backgrounds, have different areas of expertise and have our own opinions.

Agree - if you dislike for factual reasons then you should state what you believe is correct (with supporting sources if possible) or live with it. A dislike button may end up being used for the wrong reason too (for example the poster is personally disliked, even if what they say is correct)

How about unliking your like?

I use an ipad to read in bed. Sad, I know... but scrolling with the finger can select the "thanks" or "like" if one is not careful. I had not intended to "click" it, but one cannot undo this action.

There's a joke in there somewhere, sorry better not say it.:roflmao:

There are actually a few functions that will allow you to essentially "dislike" a post, which will all pretty much do the same thing: probably the quickest and easiest one is the "New Posts" button at the top left of the screen. That button will allow you to very quickly ignore and leave the post that you dislike and find one that you might like a little better........

Without rattling off the many other options, suffice to say that they will all quite successfully and happily allow you to ignore and move away from what you dislike.:wink:

Of course, it's how I get my fix of "wood and jig" videos on YouTube before sleeping :)

Drilling holes, pounding nails and beating benches is what we would all like to do all day, but alas, some of us are not the spring-chickens anymore, so its YouTube videos for us ;)

.... It's not that depraved, I like to spend a bit of time researching and learning as the brain winds down for the day. It's a poor habit.

On Larks observation, it's not so much wanting to ignore a thread, it was just an accident of navigation. I could imagine clicking "like" to some oddball comment by one of our more colourful members might get me exiled!!!!

You could always tell the poster that you dislike the post by using the reputation button, which will allow a negative reputation, but it's private and not public.

There was a Dislike button but it was deleted after a few days because it was improperly used. Within hours of it going on along with the like and thanks buttons there were heaps of dislikes and a flood of emails and pm's to admin about it from those who had their posts disliked.

The dislike button was extremely detrimental to the harmony of the forums and caused more problems than a couple of days than anything we have ever done or had on the forums. Like most things that have negative connotations it is open to abuse. The reputation system is another thing that if run properly is also open to abuse and when first put on it was heavily abused to the point of people having their forum privileges reduced because of it and some even left the forum. A couple of others were banned for improper use of it.

Even the like button has had a detrimental effect on the number of posts in the forums as people use that instead of using their words.

• If you don't like a post, don't read it.
• If you really don't like a post, use your words and say so.
• If you are offended or really, really don't like a post, Report it.
• If you find you constantly don't like posts, maybe you need to lighten up.
• If you find you continually don't like posts, maybe you need to leave the forums for some place else. You probably won't like there either but at least it won't be a problem for you on these forums.

For Evanism:
Just imagin how you would feel if there was a dislike button as well as a like button. Your finger would be scrolling you into a world of hate instead of giving the odd member a warm fuzzy feeling that at least someone liked them. Just be careful where you let your fingers roam on your iPad.... :rolleyes:
