Stain Types
Hi all,
I am going out on Saturday to buy some stain to finish of a pine entertainment unit in a Old Baltic sortof colour.
I am going to use stain made by Protec as I am using thier lacquer.
They have:
- NGR stain
- Toning Laqcuer
- Wiping stain
- Pigmented wiping stain
- spray stain
Which would be the easist to use/apply and give the most even finish
PS: I have read on several threads during searching that a product called Feast Watson Fungishield is recommended to apply before the stain, has anyone actually used this and would you consider it essential ?
Thanks
Gary

Hi Gazza
I consider FW Fungishield a must on pine. Without it the stain does not apply evenly ... looks blotchy. This article by Les Miller should help you.

If the protec product is a serious commercial stuff there will be a sealer for it.
I'm going thru a laquer "process" myself at the moment & afere a chat with the tec rep I've come up with this.
sand to 180 OR 250 if you must.
apply the sanding sealer.
cut back to 320
apply a coat of finish with the stain in it
cut with scotchbrite
apply top coat clear.
This will get arround the blotchy thing.
This may or may not suit you.
cheers
