Doors Negative - Plenty of fuss
Well today was at a job and come across these doors which were installed by one of the BIG door places you see advertising on TV all the time and this one is a shocker.
Story goes owner contacted said door place, and arranged for them to replace 5 internal doors with 5 new ones, option for one of their crappy handles, and 5c hinges, why not also option for your paint and installation service.
5 Internal doors replaced with added value bits and pieces cost was $2500 :oo:
The doors were indeed pre painted, but upon installation the hack who installed them decided they doors were too big for the jamb so he decided to plane off one side, also planing off the pre painted finish, and planing them so far he exposed the inner guts of the door, no worries I will just bog that up hack installer must have thought, yeah right, there is a 5mm deep crevice in one of the doors about 10cm long, wheree the bog must have sunk as the hole was too deep.
Never mind I will just paint over the side of the door with some undercoat, the owner won't be able to tell the difference, then I will install the 5c hinges using some old chipboard screws I found in the truck, don't bother with pre-drill, just whack them in, opps their all crooked, don't worry nobody will see it.
Now lets see, how do I install this striker, Oh you just screw it on flush don't you, !! what do you mean you need to chisel out so it sits flush, I can't do that it's too much trouble, nobody will see it.
Ok now it's time to install the lock, lets use that blunt chisel we didnt use for the striker, and hit it into the side of this freshly painted door and split the veneers off, Opps oh well I cant see a problem, can you ?.
Oh the door is rubbing on your brand new timber floor wearing a mark in it, oh never mind just don't open or close it, doors are over rated anyway.
I have seen many many door installs by said company, and I have fixed up many of those jobs as they did not want said company back again, every job I have seen by them on a scale of 1 to 10, with 1 being disgusting, 10 being perfect, non of them would have rated over 3, this one is a 1, I can't believe that said big advertising company can get away with this.
If you search google you will find hundreds of complaints from dis satisfied customers regarding their poor installation practices, I'm not sure who they use for installation but it certainly is not a carpenter, in fact its' obvious from what I'v seen they have no idea how to install anything.
I had to go to their Castle Hill shop shop to pickup one of the same poor quality doors and poor quality locks, as the client wanted to match the door to a reno I am doing, this was the same shop the client purchased the bargain doors from.
I visited said shop and told the guy I'm doing a job and need to match the same door and handle they have, and could I see their 10 lite door and handles, shop un assistant said do you know what handle you are after, I replied yes I have a good idea which one it is, show me them and I will point it out, AHH said the shop un assistant, we have so many handles you probably won't know which one it is.
Mate just show me the handles, ok It's that one (picking one of the many 7 handles they had available !!) are you sure, yes I'm sure it's that one, because you know so many people come in here and they end up picking up the wrong handle, MATE ITS THAT ONE.
I felt like saying, if you want to see many door handles to choose from go down the road to Buninngs, they have about 1000 handles to choose from not your piddly 7.
Do you also need one of our installers to install the door for you, I had to stop myself from saying something that would have got me kicked out of the shop, I replied no thank you, pointing to the very obvious wording on my work shirt, I can install the door perfectly well myself.
Then I asked do you have a 40mm exterior grade version of said 10 lite door, the client want's the same door installed out to the verandah, 40mm the un assistant replied, NO we don't do 40mm version of those doors, but you can just install that 35mm version, we do it all the time, ahh I replied but that door is an interior grade door, yes but if you put a few coats of paint on it the door should be fine outside replied un assistant, are you serious I replied, yes replied un assistant, No thanks mate, I will go buy a 40mm exterior grade version of the door elsewhere.
This place is dodgy, and their installs are dodgy, the quality of the hardware they use is the worst I'v seen, I can buy a $2 hinge from Bunnings and it will crap all over the ones they sell for much more.
No need to say much about the install, the pictures say it all, this was installed not long before Christmas, the chipboards screws are all falling out, the hinges are almost breaking apart.
