Hiya Folks
SWMBO has decided on a park bench seat for the front verandah. Standard type of thing.
She wants it to age (go grey). So far no problem - build it, sit it outside and let nature take its course.:U
At this stage I am going to use red gum for the entire project as it is a nice outdoor hard wearing timber that will grey over time and give her the desired look.
Here is the question:
Should i finish it after it has greyed out? If so, then with what?

Personally I wouldn't finish it after it has greyed off. Any oil finish on the grey would make it go a really dark colour.
If it is protected under the veranda it may take some time to grey off
I agree no finish after it goes grey. Does she know how long it will take to go grey.
On a different tack, I have also been encouraged to do a park bench which will be naturally weathered.
Will it be a bespoke plan that you are using, or a regular internet/book one? I am looking for ideas!:wink:

Bench is just a generic bench - I guess when she sees one she likes she will tell me:roll:
I will make some plans up at that point.
For weathering time - once it is built, not much she can do but wait.
If she's in a hurry for the weathered look you can use potassium dichromate, dangerous stuff so be careful if you choose to use it. http://www.shellac.net/Dichromate-Tannin.html
I think this is a perfect case of what she doesn't know can't (won't) hurt me.
